Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to move furniture out of the room to be painted?
You don’t need to move large items of furniture beforehand. It is better to move small items, end tables, chairs, and lamps. It is also a good idea to move small personal items, photos, knick-knacks etc.

The current paint on my walls is moldy and peeling. Do I need to clean before you paint?
No, if that is part of the existing condition of the room it will be noted in the estimate. A bleach and water solution combined with scraping and point-up will fix this and it will be included in the estimate as part of the preparatory work.

How soon can you paint?
Generally scheduling is done on a first come first served basis. Often if there are two or three open days between jobs smaller jobs can be bumped up. Additionally if there is a particular time frame in which you can have work performed I do have the flexibility to move other work around.

There is no real usual time frame, as every situation requires different attention.

What is your payment policy?
Generally you don’t have to pay until you are satisfied with the completed job. If the job is extraordinarily large or there are excessive material costs the job may be broken up into smaller jobs or there will be a deposit for the materials.

How long will my paint job last?
The lifetime of an interior paint job is completely dependent upon the type of overall wear the room experiences. The life of an exterior paint job is dependent upon the type of paint used. A latex job should last a minimum of two years and may last up to five years. The key to a long lasting paint job is keeping on top of the small problems before they become large problems. For example, a small uncaulked or improperly caulked crack can quickly grow allowing moisture penetration. That moisture migrates to the surface causing paint failure leaving more area for moisture penetration to cause greater problems like rotten wood, rust, etc. An alkyd (oil-base) paint job should last a minimum of 4-5 years and may last up to seven.

Do you do touch-up jobs on a previous paint job?
Generally, I don’t recommend this practice as even if you have the same can of paint that was used the last time it may not match the paint as it exists on the wall today. As far as exteriors are concerned: if you want a couple of windows, a door, a gable, etc. painted I will come out and give you a reasonable price to do that work.

Do I need one or two coats?
Depends on the job. If you wish to change the color two coats are recommended and are usually necessary. for existing exterior work where the color won’t be changed one coat will usually do the trick. Areas requiring special attention due to exposure to direct sunlight or excessive moisture may also be better served to recieve two coats of paint and a coat of primer.
